“I don't paint things. I only paint the difference between things”
Artist Henri Matisse was born onthisday in 1869.
An exhibition opening this week at the Centre Pompidou tells the story of Matisse’s career, from Fauvism to his famous cut-outs: https://www.apollo-magazine.com/....../matisse-like-a-novel/

“Wally designed two fireplaces in the living room with space for great murals around them, and our friends Henri Matisse and Fernand Léger accepted commissions to undertake the murals,” Rockefeller would recall in The Nelson A. Rockefeller Collection: Masterpieces of Modern Art. “Matisse did the mural in Paris from full-scale drawings of the fireplace, but Léger came over to New York and actually did the painting in the apartment. I used to watch Léger with fascination as he painted and the details of the mural unfolded.”
The Matisse companion mantelpiece, Le Chant (1938), depicting four women singing and listening, is on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, lent by billionaire Joe Lewis.
"The Dessert: Harmony in Red" (The Red Room ) 1908 Matisse’s Fauvist period.🎨🇲🇫️ Oil on canvas 180,5x221 cm Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.🏛️️🇷🇺️ In his Paris studio with its windows looking out over a monastery garden, in 1908 Matisse created one of his most important works of the period 1908-1913: "The Red Room". The artist himself called this a "decorative panel" and it was intended for the dining room in the Moscow mansion of the famous Russian collector Sergey Shchukin. Matisse turned to a motif common in the works created that year: a room decorated with vases, fruits and flowers.

In 1941, the writers Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet fled the Nazi-occupied zone of France, arriving in Nice. There they met and befriended Henri Matisse. Aragon resolved to write a book about the grat painter, but it wasn't until 1970, just after Elsa's death, that he finally completed “Henri Matisse, roman”. The book's main theme: the relationship between painting and writing.

And, may I suggest that the next time you visit the Barnes, you bring along a pair of binoculars? I used mine to look at The Dance from the second floor of the Philadelphia campus. Some colors were painted to mimic a wall and the drawn outlines come vividly alive. If you can’t make it to Philadelphia, you couldn’t ask for a better guide to Matisse’s work than Bois’s essay and this three-volume set devoted to one of the modern period’s greats.

About Barnes’s intellectual makeup, we’re told that his philosophy is indebted to William James and John Dewey; his aesthetics to George Santayana; his notions about psychology to Sigmund Freud; and other reflections about art to his friend Leo Stein.

Tonight's Art Moment is "A Celestial Nymph" from 10th-century India. Measuring just over 23 inches high, this female deity, known as a "lovely celestial female" or surasundari, originally shared its location on the exterior wall of a temple with other celestial figures. Balanced on her left leg, she raises her right arm to bind her long hair while a monkey pulls the thin garment from her hips. Richly ornamented, the surasundaris often display specific styles of jewelry, hair, dress and facial features that characterize their amorous nature and enigmatic grace.

November 12, 1859 in the Paris Circus of Napoleon (now it is called the Winter Circus Buglion), the first ever performance on an air trapeze took place. The artist, who made dangerous jumps and dizzying flights, was called Jules Leotard. This story became a real sensation, even Napoleon III and his wife were at one of the performances. Later, an air gymnast traveled around the world and conquered many capitals, including St. Petersburg.

Matisse THE BOOKS By LOUISE ROGERS LALAURIE
2020
Matisse by considering how in each volume, Matisse constructed an intriguing dialogue between word and image. Examining this page-by-page interplay, translating key sequences, and discussing the books’ distinct themes and production histories, Lalaurie offers the thoughtful analysis these works deserve. Together Matisse’s artist books reveal his deep engagement with questions of beauty and truth; his faith; his perspectives on aging, loss, and inspiration; and his relationship to his critics, the French art establishment, and the women in his life.
Lalaurie illuminates Matisse’s often misunderstood political affinities—though Matisse was vilified in his time for choosing to live in the collaborationist Vichy zone, his wartime books reveal a body of work that stands as a deeply personal statement of resistance.

May I tell members of the group about a forthcoming publication? MATISSE: THE BOOKS is published in September by Thames & Hudson UK and in October by the University of Chicago Press. The Italian translation by Luca Bianco publishes same time, from Einaudi. For the first time, the bulk of the illustrations from Matisse's eight major 'livres d'artiste' are reproduced in a single volume, with my interpretative and biographical reading. Pre-order from good local bookshops, the publishers' Web sites, or Amazon. https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/M/bo68372789.html
