Berger himself prefers to be described, simply, as “a storyteller”
It is in this sense that one can say that storytellers are Death's secretaries.
John Berger on Storytelling
Most, if not all, stories begin with the death of the principal protagonist. It is in this sense that one can say that storytellers are Death’s secretaries. It is Death who hands them the file. The file is full of uniformly black paper but they have eyes for reading them and from this file they construct a story for the living. Here the question of invention, so much insisted upon by certain schools of modern critics and professors, becomes patently absurd. All that the storyteller needs or has is the capacity to read what is written in black.

St. Luke, c.1605 - El Greco
“Pentecostés”, El Greco, 1600.
"The Penitent Magdalene" by Domenikos Theotokopoulos, called El Greco. El Greco was the greatest Spanish painter of the 16th century, and his exaggeratedly elongated forms have sometimes been seen as a precursor of early-20th-century Expressionism. The Magdalene, whom legend relates was a reformed prostitute, was an archetypical symbol of repentance, and was popular with artists since she provided an excuse to portray attractive women in religious subject matter. The depth of El Greco's own religious conviction is shown in her expression of rapt devotion. The skull on the right is a symbol of mortality, juxtaposed with the jar of ointment with which the Magdalene anointed Christ's feet as a symbol of her homage.

Tenebrism, from the Italian, tenebroso (murky), also called dramatic illumination, is a style of painting using very pronounced chiaroscuro, where there are violent contrasts of light and dark, and where darkness becomes a dominating feature of the image.

“Style, Swagger招搖, and Sass: Francisco de Goya and the Fashioning of Spanishness”
Francisco de Goya’s “Seated Giant” sits on the edge of the earth, between day and night, suggesting the ambiguity of once-powerful Spain’s position, uncertain of its future during the Peninsular War. The giant’s head and muscular body turn in opposing directions, expressing the contradictory nature of power. Beginning this Sunday, witness the sheer genius of Goya as we celebrate his prints in “Goya in Black and White.” Sunday, October 7, noon–5 p.m., Kimbell Art Museum, Piano Pavilion.

“Neither More, nor Less”—plays on the ideas of stature and power, as Francisco de Goya skewers the pretensions and foibles of painters—as he did with various professions in his “Caprichos” series. The monkey portraitist flatters and glorifies his subject, a large donkey— often the symbol of an ignoramus—who is transformed into an old-fashioned grandee with the addition of a wig. Starting this Sunday, come experience the wit and talent of Goya in “Goya in Black and White.” Sunday, October 7, noon–5 p.m., Kimbell Art Museum, Piano Pavilion. Admission is free.
