Virginia and Leonard Woolf set up the Hogarth Press in 1917
published works by key modernist writers as well important works in translation.
the Hogarth Press made to modernism and to British literary culture.
By Stephen Tomlin, 1931
Woolf, Virginia, 1882-1941.
‘The whole process of printing and production (except in one instance) is done by ourselves’, c. 1919.
Their first project was a pamphlet, hand-printed and bound by themselves. Within ten years the Press had become a full-scale publishing house, issuing Virginia's novels, Leonard's tracts and, among other works, the first edition of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Woolf continued as the main director of the Press until his death.

"Whispers of Immortality" is a poem by T. S. Eliot. Written sometime between 1915 and 1918, the poem was published originally in the September issue of the Little Review and first collected in June 1919 in a volume entitled Poems published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf's Hogarth Press.

Cameron's niece Julia Prinsep Stephen (née Jackson; 1846–1895) wrote the biography of Cameron that appeared in the first edition of the Dictionary of National Biography, 1886.[13] Julia Stephen was the mother of Virginia Woolf, who wrote a comic portrayal of the "Freshwater circle" in her only play Freshwater. Woolf, in collaboration with Roger Fry, edited a collection of Cameron's photographs that was published in 1926.[14]

Virginia Woolf's great novel "To The Lighthouse" was published #onthisday 5th May 1927. The book includes fictionalised semi-autobiographical reminiscences of her childhood trips to the family house in Cornwall and the characters Mr & Mrs Ramsay are probably partly based on her parents Leslie & Julia Stephen (née Duckworth). Leslie Stephen was President of The London Library for 12 years and Virginia Woolf became a life member 4 days after his death.
To the Lighthouse was one of Virginia Woolf's most successful novels (the proceeds enabling the Woolfs to buy their first car!). 3,000 copies were produced by her Hogarth Press for the first edition. This is one of them from May 1927, and we're very happy to have it!

All passion spent
Sackville-West, V. 1892-1962.
London, L. and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press 1931
The title is taken from the final three words of John Milton's Samson Agonistes.
