Portrait of Delacroix by Paul Cezanne

Eugène Delacroix, 1842 by Léon Riesener (daguerrotype). Musée d'Orsay et L'Orangerie

Fascinated by wild animals, Delacroix painted them throughout his career. At a very young age, under the influence of his friend Géricault, he drew many horse studies. The attraction for big cats begins with escapades with his friend Antoine-Louis Barye, at “la foire de Saint-Cloud” where there was a wild animal menagerie and at the Natural History Museum’s menagerie. The two artists regularly go there and study animals on the spot.
🎨 Delacroix probably created this watercolour from one of his drawings, which has strong similarities with two studies by Barye kept at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The two artists would have drawn the same animal side by side. Over a quick graphite trace, Delacroix walked his brush on the sheet with a consummate science, sometimes using the point, sometimes bending it gently, in order to modulate by large brown and ochre flows the animal's coat and snout which emerges from a dark background, of variable intensity. Standing out in close-up from these moving shadows, the lion's head, whose mane is highlighted by long flames of bright ochre, stands out as an appearance, both threatening and majestic.
📍 For preventive conservation reasons, the prints drawings department’s works are not permanently on display. If you are interested to learn more about the techniques used for this work, we invite you to visit the “Cabinet of the prints drawings” in the Sully wing.

George a faithful friend.

Our mind is a box with compartments that communicate with each other by an admirable mechanism. A great spirit that gives itself to us gives us to breathe like a bouquet of flowers where certain perfumes, which would be harmful to us isolated, charm us and revive us by their mixture with the other perfumes that modify them.

These thoughts come to me about Eugene Delacroix. I could apply them to many other eminent natures that I had the pleasure of appreciating without causing them any concern by contradicting me and even making fun of me occasionally. I have been tenacious in my resistance to some of their statements, but tenacious in my affection for them and in my gratitude for the good they have done me by exciting in me the feeling of myself. They look at me like an incorrigible dreamer; but they know that I am a faithful friend.

George Sand, from the History of My Life, Volume Two, Thirty-third Chapter, page 146 of the Wolfgang Gerhard edition, 1855.

Ces réflexions me viennent à propos d’Eugène Delacroix.

To the untrained eye, these details of Delacroix’s “Selim and Zuleika” don’t look like much, but they speak volumes to an art conservator.

The prisoner of Chillon

Between 1826 and 1827, Delacroix produced, at the request of the Parisian publisher Charles Motte, a series of seventeen lithographs to illustrate Goethe's "Faust", which had just been translated into French by Albert Stapfer.
This is the first board: Mephistopheles, all wings spread, flying above the city plunged into darkness. From the start Delacroix shows that his key character is Mephistopheles, demonic figure, romantic hero par excellence, and places the action in a fantastic atmosphere ... Eugène Delacroix, vue de Champrosay, vers 1850
✨ The Eugène-Delacroix National Museum is fortunate to exceptionally receive, as a private collection deposit, this small view of Champrosay painted by the artist around 1850. ✨

The painter has realized very few landscapes over his career and this small oil on cardboard with soft colors is a rare and moving testimony of the fascination of Delacroix for nature. 🌿 We can guess the light in the foliage and it is touching to imagine the painter stop for a moment in his wanderings, moved by the beauty of the undergrowth. 🌲

Near the forest of Sénart where the artist loved to walk a notebook drawing in hand, the village of Champrosay was an intimate refuge away from the bustle of Paris. 🌳 A place for tree watching and introspection, Delacroix stayed there several times from 1844, before buying a house a few years later.
