Jeanne Hébuterne (1898 – 1920) was a beautiful woman, a French artist best known as the frequent subject and common-law wife of the artist Amedeo Modigliani.

The artist painted about 25 of her portraits.

The couple had a daughter who was named after her mother.

During the First World War, Montparnasse became the new fashionable gathering place in Paris for artists and writers (as a replacement for Montmartre). Jean Cocteau took this photograph of Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso and André Salmon in front of the café Le Dôme in 1916.

This still from the 1957 movie Montparnasse 19 is a romantically despairing biopic about doomed archetypal misunderstood Modigliani who endured abject poverty, rejection and failure in life, but – in the tradition of Vincent Van Gough - whose paintings received great acclaim after his death at the age of 35 from tuberculosis.

To add to the pathos: Modigliani is portrayed by the impossibly handsome French actor Gérard Philipe (1922 – 1959) in one of his last roles (he would die aged just 36 from cancer).
