The dual memorial statue to German poets Johann-Wolfgang von Goethe († 22. 03.1832) and Friedrich Schiller († 9.05.1805) was unveiled in Weimar in 1857. German immigrants in the early 20th century erected copies of the memorial in, amongst other locations, San Francisco, Cleveland and Milwaukee – where they can still be seen today. The original survived World War II protected by a wall from bombing and is to this day an eyecatcher on Weimar’s Theater Square.

For almost eleven years, the two German poets exchanged views and ideas both personally and in letters, inspiring and appreciating each other. When Schiller died in 1805, it was as if Goethe had lost "half of his existence".
