小川 隆《禪思想史講義》用課堂上講課的形式和口氣略講中國的禪宗思想史，並介紹一些有關的日本禪宗思想。全書由四講而成。第1講：“北宗”與“南宗”――敦煌文獻與初期禪宗；第2講:馬祖禪與石頭禪――唐代禪的兩大潮流；第3講：由問答到公案，由公案到看話――宋代的禪宗；第4講：“無”與“近代”――鈴木大拙與20世紀的禪。

「鈴木對禪的詮釋十分直截明了。一千七百公案之中，他最愛說的或許是俱胝一指禪。他藉此強調：禪要引導我們認識的，是因為受到外界束縛誤導而沒有看到的，自己的另一個部分。那樣才能找到本來統一的完整自我。俱胝無法回答客問，或許是因為俱胝以為答案存在於他和客之間的某處，但事實上俱胝能引以做答的只有自己唯一的本心，而唯一的答案則在來客自己唯一的本心中。」
