From Edouard Manet’s portrait of naturalist writer Émile Zola sitting among his Japanese art finds to Van Gogh’s meticulous copies of the Hiroshige prints he devotedly collected, 19th-century pioneers of European modernism made no secret of their love of Japanese art. The woodblock print is single-handedly credited with the wave of japonaiserie that first enthralled France and, later, all of Europe—often as a misunderstood “exotic” artifact that served to inspire Western creativity.
The fact is that the Japanese woodblock print is a phenomenon of which there exists no Western equivalent. Some of the most disruptive ideas in modern art—including, as Karl Marx put it, that “all that is solid melts into air”—were invented in Japan in the 1700s and expressed like never before in the designs of such masters as Hokusai, Utamaro, and Hiroshige in the early 19th century.
Our new XXL book ‘Japanese Woodblock Prints’ lifts the veil on a much-loved but little-understood art form by presenting the 200 most exceptional Japanese woodblock prints in their historical context. Ranging from the 17th-century development of decadent ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world,” to the decline and later resurgence of prints in the early 20th century, the images collected in this edition make up an unmatched record not only of a unique genre in art history, but also of the shifting mores and cultural development of Japan.

【穿越時空?!】英電腦系畢業生製浮世繪地圖 即時對照當年今日真實地點

日本浮世繪的魅力有幾大?當年梵高雖然買不起像葛飾北齋《冨嶽三十六景》這些精品浮世繪,但前後依舊買了六百多幅價廉物美的作品私藏,後來更開始臨摹浮世繪。藝術家用創作向浮世繪致敬,現在又有英國電腦科學系畢業生兼浮世繪愛好者 George,根據浮世繪畫家歌川廣重的作品按圖索驥,找出畫中風景的確實位置,製作「浮世繪 Google Map」。 大家可以跟著這另類 Google Map 故地重游,展開一場浮世繪之旅。

凡走過必留痕跡,Google Map 上那些密密麻麻的紅、綠、藍色圈圈又分別代表什麼?
連成一條線的藍圈,其實是歌川廣重在 1833 年至 1834 年間創作的《東海道五十三次》,這 55 幅系列畫作描繪日本舊時由江戶(今東京)至京都所經過的 53 個宿場(相當於驛站)的景色。該系列畫作包含起點的江戶和終點的京都,所以共有 55 景。大家不妨跟著這條歌川廣重走過的路線走一趟,對比下這 53 個驛站的前世今生。

上圖浮世繪中上野公園清水觀音堂嗰棵「圈圈樹枝」樹,唔知係咪下面呢棵「月之松」呢?據聞「月之松」的確曾出現在歌川廣重的《上野清水堂不忍之池》中。但月之松早在明治初期的台風災害中已慘遭摧毀,永遠的消失在人們的視野中,後來為再現浮世繪中所描繪的江戶風景,於2012年(平成24)進行複原再造,成為我們今日在清水堂看到的模樣。

浮世繪紀錄了幾百年前日本的人間百態,如今一個「浮世繪 Google Map」整理了歌川廣重年作品,現代生活與歷史漸漸重疊。



很多外國遊客都覺得「去了日本,就能看到好多很美的浮世繪了」。有這種期待是人之常情。只可惜現實還是很冷淡的,只會讓他們失望。
上野的東京國立博物館有松方收藏展,專門展出浮世繪的太田紀念美術館則在原宿。2016年墨田北齋美術館在東京都墨田區開館。但這並不表示常設展覽裡就一定會有你想看的作品。我印象中常設展覽反而都很單薄。
浮世繪版畫很容易褪色,無法長期展出。比如墨田北齋美術館,據說內部規定每件作品的展覽時間「每年只有一個月」。因此凡是展出過一次的作品,即便再適合下次策劃的專題展,那也是「不可能拿出來給你看」的。
