女はイヌのやうな顔をし、イヌは女のやうな顔をしてゐる。作家が自分のうちに発見した地獄が語られたのだ。かういふ発見は、作家の一生のうちにも、二度とこんなみづみづしさと新鮮さで、語られる機会はないはずである。以後、川端氏は、禽獣の生態のやうな無道徳のうちに、たえず盲目の生命力を探究する作家になる。いひかへれば、極度の道徳的無力感のうちにしか、生命力の源泉を見出すことのできぬ悲劇的作家になる。これは深く日本的な主題であつて、氏のあらゆる作品の思想は、この主題のヴァリエーションだと極言してもいい。這個女人看起來像狗，狗看起來像個女人。 他告訴作家在自己身上找到了地獄。 Kaioi的發現永遠不會在作家的生活中被告知，再次具有這種新鮮感和新鮮感。 從那時起，Kawabata將成為一名藝術家，他不斷尋找盲人的活力，同時像鳥類和動物的生態一樣不道德。 無論如何，它成為一個悲劇性的作家，只有在極端的道德無能為力中才能找到活力的源泉。 這是一個深刻的日本主題，可以肯定地說，他的任何作品的思想都是這個主題的變體。
三島由紀夫認為，川端文学の一つの主題である「生命（いのち）への讃仰」、「処女」について三島由紀夫は、川端にとり「生命」＝「官能」であるとし
『山の音』《山之音》問題『反橋連作』『禽獣』《禽獸》」（毎日新聞 1955年4月11日号）三作品，是川端作品中最好，因為與日本的中古文學血脈相連，尤其是《山之音》。

以佛教教義分， 川端氏的小說，有屬於通俗的(exoteric)，如《雪國》；有的意義深遠、秘傳的 (esoteric)《睡美人》：an esoteric masterpiece。三島認為，《禽獸》屬於川端氏的傑作。
所以，hc: 編書者將《睡美人》、《禽獸》、《一只手臂》 請著名的Edward Seidensticker英譯，很有意思。
