Because of the high copper content in his stylus, the drawings faded away over time. The page appears blank until illuminated under ultraviolet light.
Think of the hands in these studies as Leonardo’s version of what Rembrandt did with his Tronies, those many sketches of faces grimacing, laughing, and sad, that he would then use as visual archetypes in his finished paintings.
Similarly, Leonardo made these various drawings of hands, in different positions in space and in activity (think also of Albrecht Durer’s famous drawings of hands between the years 1483 and 1505)
I often use the term “modern” in describing works of art that, to me, are visionary beyond their time or era. Whether that term is art historically precise is almost irrelevant- here we see the work of a genius that is so universal and eternal that there are no words to describe it nor eras in which to contain it.

Called a "Symbolic hand" in the Catalogue of the bronzes, Greek, Roman, and Etruscan, in the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, British Museum (1899), this style of sculpture is also known as a Hand of Sabazius (sometimes Sabazios). Listening Hands
In 1934, a year before his death, The German expressionistic sculptor, Ernst Barlach (1870-1938), made a special set of sculptures: The Frieze of the Listeners, nine sculptures of people who are listening. By listening they tap into a source that gives them new strength and leads them on their way through life. They do not roam about aimlessly, they are not to be subdued, as there is a higher voice that raises them above themselves.
This listening can be done in several ways. The dreamer (1), the woman dancing (3), the blind man (4), the walker (5), the sensitive one (7), and the expecting one (9) are turned inwards. The believer (2), the pilgrim (6), and the one who found favour in the eyes of the Lord (8) turn their eyes upwards. All of them radiate an inner power. Barlach said: ‘They are all saints or people of prayer.’
The Cathedral is a combination of two right hands. This work emphasizes #Rodin’s fondness and passion for these hands, in order to give them a more finished and autonomous form.

One of the leading painters of the early 17th century, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the academy of arts in Florence. This is a symbolic portrait, depicting the source of her artistic brilliance – her hand – and the paintbrush as the tool of her trade. This dramatic pair of Assyrian reliefs is thought to show the god Ninurta, with thunderbolts in his hands, pursuing the fearsome monster Anzu. They once lined the entrance to a temple in Nimrud, in the north of modern-day Iraq. Ninurta was the chief god of the ancient city. In Assyrian mythology, Anzu stole the ‘Tablet of Destinies’ – a document believed to contain details of fate and the future – which is eventually retrieved when the monster is killed by Ninurta.

“To understand what’s going through a painter’s mind, we must follow his hand”.
At the beginning of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s documentary Le Mystère Picasso (1956), the voice-over (it’s Clouzot speaking) announces: “To understand what’s going through a painter’s mind, we must follow his hand”. This is just what a fiction film about painting finds difficult. The actors are there to act, whether it’s Charlton Heston as Michelangelo or Tim Roth playing Van Gogh, to look as if they might be capable of the painting, not actually to do the job. It’s standard practice to focus on the painter’s eyes instead, the eyes that supposedly take everything in, rather than the hand and the arm where the skill lives.
The Moses (Italian: Mosè [moˈzɛ]; c. 1513–1515) is a sculpture by the Italian High Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. Commissioned in 1505 by Pope Julius II for his tomb, it depicts the biblical figure Moses with horns on his head, based on a description in chapter 34 of Exodus

Henry Moore's subject is the aged body. He made these drawings of his own hands when he was eighty-one and suffering from ill-health. 'Hands can convey so much' he said, 'they can beg or refuse, take or give, be open or clenched, show content or anxiety. They can be young or old, beautiful or deformed'. Moore saw these prints as belonging to a long tradition of fascination with hands as vehicles of expression: 'Throughout the history of sculpture and painting one can find that artists have shown through the hands the feelings they wished to represent.'

Italian Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi was born #onthisday in 1593. One of the leading painters of the early 17th century, Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the academy of arts in Florence. This is a symbolic portrait, depicting the source of her artistic brilliance – her hand. The words at the top describe this as ‘the worthy hand of the excellent and skilful Artemisia, gentlewoman of Rome’. Happy birthday to artist Nam June Paik, born on this day in 1932. Paik was born in Seoul, South Korea, but grew up and lived in Japan, Germany, and, finally, New York. Paik pioneered the use of new media, including video, in art. Take a look at "Untitled (Red Hand)" from 1967.
He brought this 19-century Japanese scroll to New York when he moved there in 1964. 3 years later, he made this important work by adding his own handprint to the scroll and illuminating it from behind with a flashing light bulb. Traditionally, a Japanese scroll features a red wax seal imprinted by the collector to show ownership. Look closely and you’ll see Paik’s handprint is just above that seal, as if he’s acknowledging a journey from artist, to owner, to artist again.
