️"The Odyssey" director Christopher Nolan was captivated by the opening line of Emily Wilson's best-selling translation of the Greek epic:
"Tell me about a complicated man."
Using Homer's original 12,109 lines in Old English as inspiration, the Penn classics professor rewrote the epic poem in 2017, making her the first-ever published English translation by a woman.
Now on the Hammer Channel! 📺 Hear the author read from her translation, followed by a conversation with Some Favorite Writers moderator Mona Simpson.
Nolan's choice to skim portions of the story and take out brutal material leaves us with a simpler, more sentimental story of a man who just wants to go home, who loves his old dog, his son, and his wife, and somehow ends up killing an enormous number of people. He doesn’t seem particularly clever or wily and he’s anything but complicated (Emily Wilson’s translation of polutropos). He’s basically yet another action hero—big-biceped, strong, sweaty, taciturn. Nolan leaves out the plot points most alien to contemporary sensibilities—the extreme violence and sadism, the gods constantly interfering in human affairs. (Only Athena, played by Zendaya, appears now and then, mostly to criticize him, less a majestic deity than a girlfriend who is really tired of picking up his socks.) But he also leaves out much that makes Homer’s Odyssey an indelible work of imagination, Odysseus an endlessly fascinating character, and his story so rich in multiple meanings—so polutropos—that people have been turning it over in their minds for three thousand years.
(Tell me about a complicated man)作為開頭。
此外,神明也會說出「你一定是在開玩笑吧!(You must be joking!)」
"It's a Trojan horse that everybody knows the Greeks are inside. It's a transparent horse, it's made of glass. Everybody can see what's going on inside of there. I've never seen a technology advancing so rapidly while being so completely rejected by the public. Everybody's suspicion of it is so extreme, particularly young people."
While modern popular culture treats the Trojan Horse as the grand climax of the Trojan War, Homer’s Iliad actually ends well before the event, concluding with the funeral of the Trojan prince Hector. Homer’s Odyssey only mentions the horse in brief flashbacks, such as songs performed by the bard Demodocus and memories shared by King Menelaus, giving Odysseus credit for the stratagem without detailing the city's fall.
In antiquity, the full narrative was recorded in a series of now-lost Greek poems known as the "Epic Cycle" (specifically the Little Iliad and the Ilioupersis). Because those early Greek texts vanished over time, a massive narrative gap was left in surviving classical literature, leaving ancient and modern readers alike without a detailed Greek account of the final siege.
That gap was dramatically filled nearly eight centuries later when the Roman poet Virgil composed the Aeneid (written between 29 and 19 BC).
In Book 2, Virgil presents a vivid, heart-pounding first-person account of Troy’s final night through the eyes of Aeneas, a Trojan survivor who would go on to lay the foundations for Rome. Virgil introduced the famous dramatic details that define the legend today: the deceptive Greek spy Sinon who convinced the Trojans the horse was a sacred gift, the tragic priest Laocoön who warned "I fear the Greeks, even when bringing gifts" before being killed by sea serpents, and the chaos as soldiers poured from the horse's hollow belly to open the gates.
Because the Aeneid became the central literary masterpiece of the Roman Empire and Western education, Virgil’s Roman-centric retelling permanently cemented the story of the Trojan Horse into world history.
The Trojan Horse is a story from the Trojan War about the subterfuge that the Greeks used to enter the independent city of Troy and win the war. In the canonical version, after a fruitless 10-year siege, the Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse, and hid a select force of men inside including Odysseus.
